The 20th, autumn issue of “Awedis” had been published. In “The word from the editor” column we read:
It is the 20th issue of “Awedis” that have been published for you. We feel greatly honoured for being able to deliver the most important information from the lives of Armenian communities in Poland and share stories about the history and heritage of Polish Armenians for 5 years. We believe that thanks to our periodical you have discovered the specifics and wealth of the Polish-Armenian environment. After all, we have our own heritage of which we can be proud of and beautiful stories in the Polish history, written by those famous, less-known or even forgotten Armenians.
The main goal of our periodical always was, and still is, to connect Armenians in Poland. We dream of a strong, friendly and open Armenian community. However we cannot forget about the relations with the one big Diaspora. That is why we have decided to extend the size of the “From the life of Diaspora” column in this issue, from one to two pages and covered more, important topics from abroad, trying to make closer the Polish Armenians to the Armenian communities from outside of Poland.
We could not resist to publish the first part of the great historical paper written by dr hab. Krzysztof Stopka, which was also published on ordynariat.ormianie.pl website. The text explains the roots of the Armenian catholics in Poland in a clear and neutral way. We wish to deliver our readers as much historical information as possible - especially of such high quality.
The 20th issue of the periodical will also introduce the changes within our small editorial team. Jakub Kopczyński, Polish Armenian from his mother's side, who started his Armenian adventure by his fascination of Armenian religious music and the beautiful liturgy, is the new editor-in-chief. Our former editor-in-chief, Armen Artwich, is not leaving “Awedis” and will still be working on creating and improving it. The new editor-in-chief is waiting for your ideas and remarks:

Na II Targach Konserwacji i Restauracji Zabytków oraz Ochrony, Wyposażenia Archiwów, Muzeów i Bibliotek - DZIEDZICTWO prezentowano m.in. zabytki, których restauracja była finansowana przez Fundację Kultury i Dziedzictwa Ormian Polskich z dotacji Ministerstwa Kultury i Dziedzictwa Narodowego. Były to: drewniana kaplica, zwana „Golgotą” na dziedzińcu katedry ormiańskiej we Lwowie, czy figura św. Krzysztofa koło katedry.
W trakcie trzydniowych targów (7-9 października) wystawcy prezentują najnowsze rozwiązania służące przechowywaniu, digitalizacji i zabezpieczaniu zbiorów muzealnych i archiwistycznych. Pokazano osiągnięcia z zakresu konserwacji i ochrony zabytków w Polsce i na terenach dawnych kresów Polski. Odbywają się panele dyskusyjne, wykłady i fora związane z problemami konserwacji, ochrony dziedzictwa kulturowego i pozyskiwania funduszy na rewitalizację obiektów zabytkowych.
Jak zapowiadaliśmy, 14 września w ogrodzie przedszkola
„Wesoły Wróbelek” przy ul. Modlińskiej 275 na warszawskiej Białołęce miał miejsce
piknik charytatywny na rzecz leczenia w Polsce małej Laury Gharibyan. Ze strony
ormiańskiej szczególnie dopisali wolontariusze ze Szkółki Ormiańskiej w
Warszawie prowadzonej przez Margaritę Jeremian i z Fundacji Polsko-Ormiańskiej
państwa Owsepianów. Jak pisze organizatorka, pani Elżbieta Rajczak, takiego
wyboru ciast jaki był dostępny na niedzielnym pikniku chyba już nigdy nie uda się
jej wyczarować. Zaznaczyć należy, że cały dochód ze sprzedaży tych wyrobów
przeznaczony był na zasilenie funduszu dla Laury. Organizatorzy również bardzo chwalili wolontariuszki za
ciekawe zajęcia przeprowadzone dla uczestników pikniku. Fundacja Kultury i
Dziedzictwa Ormian Polskich również wspierała przygotowania do akcji i była
obecna na imprezie. Dużym zainteresowaniem cieszyła się najnowsza publikacja
Fundacji – „Z przeszłości Armenii” Lisicjana. Niestety dał się zauważyć brak
przedstawicieli innych warszawskich organizacji ormiańskich, jak również
niezrzeszonych członków naszej społeczności, a szkoda bo nagłośnienie dramatu małej
Laury i dochód z imprezy były tej dzielnej dziewczynce bardzo potrzebne. Była
to też okazja do zaprezentowania własnych organizacji, jak i spraw związanych z
Armenią i ormiańską diasporą w Polsce.

The 19th, summer issue of “Awedis” has been published. In “The word from the editor” column we read:
We present you the 19th issue of “Awedis” hoping to deliver you the most important and interesting information about the Armenian community in Poland and around the world. We believe that our journal will continue to increase awareness of Armenians and Poles about the great number of Armenian events that take place each year. Those events are very often not mentioned in mass media. We also believe that in the next “Awedis” will have the possibility and pleasure to correspond about consolidations and development of Armenian communities in Poland.
First few pages present the most important events of last three months, such as cultural events in the northern Poland and the nomination of the new representative of Armenian minority in Poland. The new representative, a professional in every bit, surely will contribute into activating intercommunity relations and increase credibility of Armenians on the international arena. Similar to that, opening of the exhibitions of two famous painters with Armenian background – Iwan Ajwazowski and Teodor Axentowicz – will help to build stronger relations between Poland and Armenia.
In the article written by Roma Obrocka we discuss the condition of the cathedral in Lvov and Piruza Mnacakanian covers the story of a famous singer Lusine Zakarian as a part of a series of extraordinary Armenians. Because of his 200th birth anniversary we are publishing a short biography of a known Polish Armenian, historian, father Sadok Barącz, which can also be found on the website wiki.ormianie.pl. Farther, Magda Bernacka shares a story from her trip to Bukovina following the trails of Armenian ancestors. In our regular column “From the life of Diaspora”, prof. Ara Sayegh tells an intriguing story of carpet made by Armenian orphans for the US president as a gratitude for saving them from the Genocide. The last page we are reminding about the commemoration of the 99th genocide anniversary, which were already prepared with the thought about the next year, 100th anniversary. “Awedis” would not be complete without the regular review of the most interesting publications of last season.

Armenian public television H1 broadcasted the coverage of Armen Artwich’s (editor-in-chief of “Awedis” and vice-chairman of our foundation) lecture “Sumgait and Khojaly” which took place on the 6th of June 2014 at the Collegium Maius of the Jagiellonian University of Cracow.
The meeting was a part of the “Let’s talk about Armenia” series, arranged in cooperation by the editorial board of “Lehahayer” journal, published by the Institute of History of the Jagiellonian University, Commission on Eastern Europe of the Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Foundation of Culture and Heritage of Polish Armenians. The 18th, spring issue of “Awedis” has been published. In “The word from the editor” we read:
Armenian community which is living in Poland for years developed their own, original culture. The culture that vary not only from Poles which are surrounding them or Russians, Jews and other nations, but is also different from the common Armenian culture. Things like geographical separation of the Armenian colonies, language difference (lack of knowledge of Armenian language, substituted with Kipchak and later on with Polish) and religion (especially after the 17th cent. Union with the catholic church) had impact on shaping those difference. This rich heritage of Polish Armenians is being successfully popularized among Polish recipients in the last years. However it is often unknown among Armenians from around the world who sometimes are certain that Polish Armenians completely disappeared during World War II.
That makes the initiative of popularizing the culture and heritage of Polish Armenians outside of Poland even more interesting. In this issue of “Awedis” we write about the international exhibition of Armenian heritage in Gyumri, where at the same time was being prepared the documentation of the legacies of Polish Armenians, presented by Ewa Abgarowicz. Gagik Parsamian is informing about incoming great events – exhibition of works of Teodor Axentowicz and Iwan Ajwazowski – the extraordinary painters with Armenian roots – which will take place in Sopot this year in June. The exhibition will be officially opened by the presidents of Poland and Armenia. Later on the works of Axentowicz will be moved to his homeland – Armenia. In Hayastan people remember also another great artist of Polish Armenian roots – composer Krzysztof Penderecki – in which name was a celebration held recently in Yerevan.
At the same time, wanting to propagate among Polish Armenians the news that should be important for every Armenian around the globe we would like to introduce a series of articles presenting stories of Armenian national heroes – in this issue, a touching story of the great Hovsep Emin written by Piruza Mnacakanian.
Farther, we mention the 26th anniversary of the Sumgait pogrom – one of the freshest wounds made to the Armenian nation; We record a religious liveliness in the Polish Armenian community; we write about the forgotten vardapet Stefan Wartanowicz Lehacy, whose grave is in Echmiadzin; and we are following the trails of the saint Nerses Shnorhali in Kuty.

On Saturday, march 15th 2014, students from the 2nd middle school of Przymierza Rodzin im. Ks. Jana Twardowskiego in Warsaw visited the Archive of Polish Armenians which is ran by our Foundation.
During this few hour trip the students not only learned about the history of Armenia and Polish Armenians but also took part in Armenian writing workshops, seen our valuable scripts and manuscripts collected in our Archive, get to know Armenian liturgical items and learned the prayer “Paternoster” – “Hajer mer” in Armenian. The workshops were lead by: Jan Abgarowicz, Armen Artwich, Edgar Broyan and Sjune Nersisjan.

Great Armenian writer Howannes Tumanyan (1869-1923) wrote: Armenian despair is a see without shore / unfathomable whirlpools / On this great and dark expanse / my soul sails – a holy shred
In 1988 that sea has burst its shores – in the harsh winter Armenia suffered a destructive earthquake.
Whole cities were destroyed, 25.000 Armenians lost their lives and many lost their homes – it was a serious hit for the Armenian economy. Cruel faith once again pushed many Armenians to emigrate. Simultaneously many Polish Armenians volunteered to help . Organized found-raisers, transports with gifts and organized camps for children that suffered that tragedy. Reminiscing the 25th anniversary of the cataclysm let’s spend a few minutes thinking about the sufferings that came across the Armenian nation. Let’s also remember about those kind people that brought help to the victims of the earthquake. In fact a friend in need is a friend indeed...
Recently we were recollecting the 75th anniversary of death of Archbishop Józef Teodorowicz – the last Armenian diocesan of Lvov and notable Polish statesman. We should express our appreciation that thanks to our environment the memory of this “sentenced to forgetness” character is being systematically restored. In “Awedis” we are covering the story from the anniversary celebrations that took place in Warsaw, Katowice, Kraków and Lublin.
Initial goal of “Awedis”, to bring the Polish Armenians together is still being kept, despite the language, culture and historical barriers, we are publishing the National Anthem of Armenia– “Mer Hayrenik”. To make it easier we are publishing it not also in the original language but in Polish transcription and translation. We believe that it can and should be one of the links connecting Armenians from all around the world. We want to encourage all Armenians that immigrated back in the days and Poles which fathers came to Poland and do not know “Mer Hayrenik” to learn it.
Furthermore we are informing about the visit of Catholicos Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX in Lublin, Romana Obrocka and Anna Olszańska relates recent projects to popularise knowledge about Armenians, Professor Ara Saeygh covers the story about the “Armenian Bridge” in Amsterdam and Adam Domanasiewicz relates...dance of the Japanese towards remembrance of victims of the Armenian genocide.

Przypadająca w bieżącym roku 75. rocznica śmierci wielkiego Polaka i patrioty ormiańskiego pochodzenia abp. Józefa Teodorowicza stworzyła niepowtarzalną okazję do przypomnienia tej zasłużonej dla Polski i Kościoła postaci. W Fundacji Kultury i Dziedzictwa Ormian Polskich zrodził się pomysł zorganizowania tygodniowych obchodów związanych ze wspomnianą rocznicą pod nazwą „Tydzień pamięci o ormiańskim arcybiskupie i polskim patriocie Józefie Teodorowiczu”. Uroczystości odbywały się w: Warszawie 30 listopada, w Katowicach 4 grudnia i w Krakowie 6–7 grudnia 2013 roku.
„Tydzień pamięci” dofinansowano ze środków Muzeum Historii Polski w Warszawie w ramach programu „Patriotyzm Jutra”.
Inauguracja „Tygodnia pamięci” w kościele i klasztorze ojców Dominikanów
w Warszawie 30 listopada 2013 roku
4 grudnia 2008 roku, w 70. rocznicę śmierci Arcybiskupa, Senat Rzeczypospolitej Polskiej przyjął uchwałę oddającą hołd najwybitniejszemu z polskich Ormian. Wydarzeniu towarzyszyła wystawa „Wielki zapomniany. Arcybiskup ormiański Józef Teodorowicz (1864–1938) – wybitny polski kapłan i mąż stanu", przygotowana przez Fundację Kultury i Dziedzictwa Ormian Polskich.
Od tamtego czasu FKiDOP rokrocznie, w listopadowo-grudniowy czas, organizuje wspomnienie „Wielkiego zapomnianego”, a wystawa była już eksponowana w Gdańsku, Gliwicach, Jarosławiu, Krakowie, Poznaniu, Rzeszowie, Wrocławiu i w Katowicach.
Inauguracja tegorocznego wspomnienia miała miejsce w Warszawie 30 listopada. W Warszawie, bo mimo że „lwowski”, to troska o sprawy ojczyzny wiązała Go z Warszawą często i znacząco. Uroczysta liturgia rozpoczęła się o godzinie 16 w dominikańskim kościele św. Jacka. Nieprzypadkowo w tej świątyni, ze względu na tradycyjne związki Ormian z dominikanami. W albumie Ormiańska Warszawa prof. Krzysztof Stopka pisząc o „duszpasterstwie rytu ormiańskiego w dawnej Warszawie” , odnotowuje: „Zasiedzieli już w Polsce Ormianie poradzili sobie z oswojeniem Warszawy dosyć łatwo. Przylgnęli tu do dominikanów, których dobrze znali ze Lwowa i Podola, a którzy z kolei dobrze znali ich kulturę, a nawet mieli między sobą wielu współbraci pochodzenia ormiańskiego”. Do dziś zachowało się w prezbiterium XVII-wieczne epitafium z brązu w języku staro ormiańskim – grabarze. Treść epitafium wzrusza niezmiennie i w języku polskim: „To jest grób pana Jakuba pielgrzyma, syna Minas, jerespochana z Jazłowca, spoczął w Chrystusie w roku 1132 [1683] dnia 20 czerwca”.
Podczas warszawskich uroczystości 30 listopada br., upamiętniających 75. rocznicę śmierci abpa Józefa Teodorowicza (z których relację zamieścimy już wkrótce), miało miejsce szczególnie podniosłe wydarzenie.
W obecności licznie zgromadzonych Ormian, ich sympatyków oraz duchownych, wojewoda mazowiecki Jacek Kozłowski w imieniu Prezydenta RP udekorował panią Ewę Abgarowicz - wieloletnią prezes Fundacji Kultury i Dziedzictwa Ormian Polskich (2006-2012) - Srebrnym Krzyżem Zasługi. W uzasadnieniu tego odznaczenia wojewoda podkreślił liczne zasługi p. Ewy Abgarowicz dla wspólnoty Ormian w Polsce, a szczególnie ofiarną i bezinteresowną pracę na rzecz zachowania i popularyzacji Spuścizny Ormian Polskich, przechowywanej w Fundacji Kultury i Dziedzictwa Polskich Ormian w Warszawie.
Sama odznaczona podkreśliła, że odznaczenie przyjmuje jako wyraz uznania dla pracy całej Fundacji Kultury i Dziedzictwa Ormian Polskich, którą współtworzyła i kierowała od początku istnienia Fundacji.
16th issue of “Awedis” had been published. In “The word from the editor” column we read:
In 2013 is the 650th anniversary of promulgating the erection act of the famous Armenian cathedral in Lvov. It is an important anniversary for the Polish Armenians – the spiritual heritors of the cathedral. Such an occasion could not be celebrated in a different place then in Lvov. For this event a national committee has been established, who organised a pilgrimage to Lvov for Polish Armenians. In “Awedis” we are publishing an extensive photo and text relation from this touching event.
At the same time, also in Lvov, a different important for Polish Armenians event took place. For the first time after the war, artworks of great Polish painters of Armenian roots, Antoni and Kajetan Stefanowicz, were exhibited. For all this time the paintings were kept hidden in the Lvov’s Art Gallery’s storage rooms. The works were revealed thanks to the efforts of the artists’ grand and great-grandson – Krzysztof Stefanowicz - who gave an extensive interview to Romana Obrocka.
In the “From the Life of Diaspora” column, Prof. Ara Seyegh mentions the symbolic gesture from the Kurdish leaders, who asked the Armenians for forgiveness for participation of their ancestors in the Armenian genocide. Also a memorial dedicated to the victims of this crime was unveiled and the Kurds stated that they will put effort into convincing the Turkish government to acknowledge the truth about the Armenian genocide. This moving and important for the Armenians gesture should be an example for those who cannot face their past.
Also in this issue: we are inviting to participate in the celebrations dedicated to the 75th anniversary of death of the last Lvov’s Armenian Archbishop and Polish statesman – Józef Teodorowicz. Announcement of the visit of Armenian-catholic Catholicos-Patriarch Nereses Bedros XIX. Relation from this visit will be published in the next issue of “Awedis”

The fifteenth issue of "Awedisu" has been published. The editorial reads:
Among the events of recent months come to the fore two visits at the highest level. Almost simultaneously Poland was visited by: Serzh Sargsyan, President of Armenia and the Armenian-Catholic Catholicos-Patriarch Nerses Bedros XIX. Graceful reminder of the presidential visit is khachkar - a gift of the government of Armenia to Warsaw. Stone, carved into the tuff cross stands in a nice area Mokotów (district of Warsaw), and the Warsaw City Council decided to call the square "Armenian".
Visit of Catholicos was instead a spiritual experience for the Polish Armenian Catholics. Especially moving was Nerses Bedros XIX's prayer before worshiped by Polish Armenians for centuries Miraculous Icon of the Mother of God Łysiecka in Gliwice - clear indication of communication between the Polish community and the Armenian-Catholic Church in the world. In the current issue of "Awedis" both visits are covered.
As a result of the suggestions flowing from the readers, two new regular columns were created: "From the Life of the Diaspora " - edited by prof. Ara Sayegh, and "Culture" in which we plan to focus on events, artists and works close to the heart of every Armenian, not only in Poland. We hope that these changes will prove good for "Awedis " and will help play even better role of a bridge between ethnic Armenian culture and heritage of Polish Armenians.
In addition, Monika Agopsowicz is talking with Gohar Chaczatrian, who directs the Armenian school in Krakow, just awarded by the Ministry of Diaspora of Armenia. Jaroslaw Fret talks about planned Polish celebrations of the centenary of the Armenian Genocide, Roman Obrocka reports Pentecost in Wroclaw, on the medallion on page 11 looks coquettishly Urszula Łazarowiczowa - eighteenth-century Warsaw dictators of fashion, of course Armenian native of Lvov .

Three register books from Tyśmienica – baptisms, marriages and deaths – are in the Archive of Polish Armenians which is run by the Foundation of Culture and Heritage of Polish Armenians and are being shared as manuscripts in the Virtual Archive of Polish Armenians (WAPO: www.archiwum.ormianie.pl). The books are being systematically indexed to ease searching through the books and are shared in WAPO.

14th, spring issue of “Awedis” has been published. In “the word from the editor” we can read: Certainly the most important event of the past few months was the visit of Abp. Rafael Minasian in Poland – the Ordinary of the Armenian-Catholics in Eastern Europe, just like he use to joke - the traveler bishop – because his bishopric is spread on the whole territory of the former Soviet Republic (normally the Hierarch lives in Yerevan). On the Palm Sunday in Warsaw, the honorable guest celebrated mass during which he honoured father Tadeusz Isakowicz-Zaleski. During the Passion Week he visited Armenian communities in Southern Poland and he charmed everyone with his directness and kindness. You can find photos and a report from the visit in this issue of “Awedis”.
Polish Armenians are justly proud of Józef Nikorowicz – XIXth century, Polish composer of Armenian roots, the author of the melody of famous “Choral” (“With the smoke of the fires”) – one of the Polish national anthems. Artist and the mysteries of his compositions are demystified in an article written by a famous musicologist Zbigniew Kościów (from the Armenian family Manugiewiczów). Certain facts were also revealed during this research, like the composers date of birth or other personal data.
Romana Obrocka reminds the remarkable character of recently deceased Anna Kulczycka of Piotrowicz’s – a patriotic enthusiast, caregiver of an outstanding family collection of eastern carpets which she donated to “The Motherland and Polish Nation”. Also describes the story of our journal’s associate – Prof. Ara Sayegh from Aleppo, Syria, who was invited by the Technical University of Wrocław and since November 2012 he is living in Wrocław along with his family.
Additionally we are listening into the lyrical concert by the khachkar, admire the performance of ZAR theatre and baking a layer cake.

Bardzo ciekawą dla badaczy koligacji rodzinnych jest udostępniona w Wirtualnym Archiwum Polskich Ormian (WAPO) księga zapowiedzi przedślubnych z parafii ormiańskokatolickiej w Czerniowcach, obejmująca lata od 1861 do 1915. Proszę zwrócić uwagę, że oryginalna numeracja stron jest od pewnego momentu pomylona i nie należy się nią sugerować. Do pobrania jest plik .pdf, ktory ma ok. 30 Mb tak, że pobranie go może chwilę potrwać. Zapraszamy do lektury.
